Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1.E01 [Pilot]

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1.E01 [Pilot]

The first episode of SHIELD was pretty much the shit. Keeping in mind that it was the pilot episode, it wasn’t a bad start for the series. The main cast has a familiar chemistry found on shows like Buffy and Firefly but this is definitely a different group.

The main focus of this episode was on a superhero named Mike with the ability to completely fuck everything up. In my opinion, he was the weakest part of the pilot. I don’t know if it’s the actor or the character but I could not give any fucks as to whether or not he survived through the episode. I think it was a combination of his lame powers and shitty attitude that made it hard to care for his character. The fact that he turned out to be a trainwreck didn’t help his case. There’s also another faction, The Rising Tide, that’s causing problems as well.

The Team

The first member of the team we’re introduced to is Agent Ward. This guy is a badass and his introduction was definitely my favorite of the cast. He fights like a champ and is smooth as butter, not to mention the dynamic between him and Skye works well. His serious persona mixes well with her forceful charm. It won’t be long until these two are banging. We get to know the most about Ward’s character than anyone elses due to the injection of a truth serum from Phil Coulson–whose death was faked in attempt to unite the Avengers. Coulson’ plan is to unite a team of his own to handle the everyday problems that are sure to arise in a world where superheroes exist.

Once Ward is recruited into Coulson’s team, he’s introduced to Fitz-Simmons. A duo that reminds me of the Lutece twins from Bioshock Infinite, so basically I’m obsessed with them too. Fitz’s area of expertise lies in engineering – while Simmons is bio-chem.

Melinda May is the final piece of the puzzle. A reluctant badass who proves why she’s legend among her peers. When an agent of The Rising Tide  pulls a shotgun on Skye, May comes out of nowhere and fucks his world up. I fell in love.

Skye is a twenty-something hacker type who is beautiful, witty and extremely persistent. She’s the source of comedic relief on the show and is a huge smartass – which makes her alright in my book. It’s not long before she joins SHIELD as a full time member, so we’ll hopefully get to see the extent of her hacking abilities.

The episode ends up shifting it’s focus towards something called Extremis, and when I researched it I only got more confused. So look it up yourself. In fact, I’m not really sure what the hell is going on with this show plot wise, but the cast is amazing and I understand patience is key with any new TV show. Especially one of this caliber.

I’ll give this episode a score of 7/10. I know this series is capable of so much more.
